VITAL RECORDS

Birth and Death records are available from the Local Registrar of the municipality where the event occurred. Marriage records are available from the Town or City Clerk of the municipality where the Marriage License was issued. 

All Applications or requests for Vital Records/genealogy information must include the appropriate fees. Personal checks must clear before the record is released. The fee for a birth, death, or marriage record is $10 per record.

Who is elibible to obtain a birth certificate copy?

  • The person named on the birth certificate
  • A parent of the person named on the birth certificate (requesting parent's name must also be listed on the birth certificate)
  • A spouse, child, or other persons ONLY by oerder of a New York State Court

Identification Requirements - application must be submitted with copies of either A or B below:

A. One of the following items of valid photo-ID:

  • Driver License
  • State issued non-driver photo-ID
  • Passport
  • U.S. Military issued photo-ID

B. Tow (2) of the following showing the applicant's name and address:

  • Utility bill
  • Letter from a government agency dated within the last six (6) months

Who is eligible to obtain a death certificate copy?

  • The spouse, parent, or child of the deceased
  • Other persins who have a documented lawful right or claim, a documented medical need, or with a New York State Court Order

Identification Requirements - application must be submitted with copies of either A or B:

  • Driver License
  • State issued non-driver photo-ID
  • Passport
  • U.S. Military issued photo-ID

b. Two (2) of the following showing the applicant's name and address:

  • Utility bill
  • Letter from a government agency dated within the last six (6) months

Genealogy Research

Who is elibible to obtain a marriage certificate copy?

  • The bride or groom
  • Other persons who have a doocumented judicial or other proper purpose
  • Other persons with a New York State Court Order

What types of records are available from the New York State Department of Health for genealogy research?

Vital records started in New York State outside of New York City in 1881. Generally, the New York State Department of Health provides uncertified copies of the following types of records for genealogy researh purposes:

  • Birth Certificates - if on file for at least 75 years and the person whose name is on the birth certificate is known to be deceased.
  • Death Certificates - if on file for at least 50 years.
  • Marriage Certificates - if on file for at least 50 years and the bride and groom are both known to be deceased.

The time periods are waived for direct-line descendants. The direct-line descendant applicant must provide the following:

  • Proof of their relationship to the person whose record they are requesting
  • Proof of death of the person(s) whose birth certificate and/or marriage certificate they are requesting.
